“Why is that my
mother says not to
touch pickle during my menstrual period days”
“Why do I get
my periods during my school days itself where
I will become mother only very later”
“Is my
menstrual flow impure?”
These were some
of the many questions
asked by girls of age 10 years to 15years
who attended this awareness program.
Our Indian
system has given special place
and respect to women and so many good practices have been enforced through certain specific
commands.
For example
“Don’t touch pickle
during periods” is really
helpful. Pickles contain
lots of salt. It is recommended
to reduce salt intake to prevent fluid
retention. So only few may understand all these reasoning so a
general statement of don’t touch pickle
covers every one.
Training to the TREP (hostel) attached to Sai
Shanka Vidyashala, Sriramanahalli was given by Zone trainer Jc Anuradha Jeyachander
The objectives
of the program were
1. To address common myths and misconceptions regarding menstruation
2. To enable adolescent girls to overcome
inhibitions to talk about menstruation and seek help when required
3. To impart awareness on maintaining personal
hygiene during menstruation
An relaxed atmosphere was set up where the girls were made to feel at
ease and they started sharing their experienced and and got their questions clarified.
An animation video called “Mythri” was used to
explain “why, when, how, what to do” aspects of the menstruation process
We would like to record our gratitude to Shrimathi Sinu Joseph(of the “Mythri” Project)
for sharing the animation
video to be used for this training
